Bear and Lucky - Blue Heeler/Malamute mix (12 Years Old)
[Coming Soon]
Bailey - Golden Retriever (16 Years Old)
Bailey, a sweet 15 year old Golden Retriever, came to us from a local shelter, where he was a "repeat stray". In other words, he was picked up by animal control many times before, but each time his owners would come and claim him. This time, they didn't, leaving this old man sad, confused, and alone. So, we came and got him, along with Teddy, and he enjoyed the snow, comfy beds, and treats while we searched for a forever home. After many applications, we finally found the perfect home. Bailey now lives at the Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies, as his mom is an employee. He enjoys sleeping on the bed, visiting with his many other golden retriever friends, and greeting all the volunteers. He is currently being treated for heart worm, which is easily preventable, but difficult to treat (please, keep your dogs on heart worm preventative). We are all wishing him a quick recovery!
Nina - German Shepherd Dog (10 Years Old)
Nina came to us from Longmont Humane Society, where she was surrendered by her owners when they found they could no longer afford to care for her. In addition to a severe ear infection, broken teeth, and bad hips, Nina was diagnosed with mammary cancer. Luckily, the masses were operable, and, thanks to donations from our awesome senior dog loving community, Nina got her surgery. Now, she is living on a farm, where she looks after newborn lambs, helps her mom work on the acreage, and plays with her three Great Pyrenees brothers. Thank you to everyone who made Nina's new life possible.
Nutmeg - Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Mix (8 Years Old)
This adorable came to us as a stray for a wonderful Colorado shelter. With a sweet and gentle disposition, it was impossible not to fall in love with her! And so, the inevitable happened, and Nutmeg found her forever home on December 24th, 2013 with her foster parents (just in time for the holidays)! She now lives with them and two beautiful sister dogs, who all love her!
Peggy Sue - Calico mix (12 Years Old)
We know, that's a cat, not a dog! Well, Peggy Sue was a special girl, and we decided we couldn't just leave this senior sweetie in the shelter, so we teamed up with the Community Cat Coalition of Colorado and got this girl into a home! She was lucky enough to be adopted by her awesome foster parents on November 16th, 2013! They wrote an awesome story about her called "Adopting Peggy Sue"! Check it out!
Before I tell you our story of adopting Peggy Sue, I want to tell you just a little about my wife and I first. We are admitted cat people. Before we decided to adopt Peggy Sue, we already had 4 cats. Technically 3 since 1 of the 4 is my nephew’s cat that he will take with him if and or when he gets his own apartment. Two years ago just before Christmas, we had to let go our nearly 19 year old cat Tyche, who we had in our lives since she was only 2 weeks old. She was a stubby tailed Manx who we loved as much as anyone can love another creature on this earth. That day was the most difficult day in our lives. Even now, 2 years later, I still cry just thinking about her and how much I miss her. Though my wife Tammy and I never discussed it, we both knew some day we would be ready to bring another cat into our home.
In September, while on Facebook, my wife came across a post asking for someone to foster a 12 year old cat that had been in the shelter for 2 months. My wife showed me the photo of Peggy Sue that was on the post and while we both though she was cute, neither of us noticed anything unusual about her. We both felt sorry for her knowing how difficult it is to find homes for older cats. A couple of days went by, and during the time I kept thinking about that post and wanting to help, but thinking “we already have 4 cats”.
Finally, I decided “Let’s do it” and help this poor cat that nobody else wants, and had Tammy contact CCCC to foster Peggy Sue. After filling out the application and being approved to foster her, the day finally came for us to meet Peggy Sue for the first time.
When she was brought to our home, both Tammy and I went outside to the parking lot to meet the people from CCCC who brought her. As they walked toward us carrying Peggy Sue in her carrier, we both heard her meowing and started to cry. She sounded EXACTLY like our Tyche who we had lost 2 years ago! Then, once she was brought in to our home and let out of her carrier it really struck us, Peggy Sue is a Manx just like Tyche with nearly the exact same coloring! The only real difference between them is Peggy Sue has a long tail. I knelt down to meet and pet her and Peggy Sue immediately began to rub her head against mine and purr like she had known me her whole life. I felt like this was meant to be. For me, it didn’t take long after to realize that I didn’t want to just foster her. I wanted to make our home, her home, permanently.
We took the introduction to our other cats slowly, with Peggy Sue having her own room away from our cats to get used to her new home. While there has been some hissing between all of them as is to be expected with cats, there haven’t been any fights. Now, she has full roam of the house and she is even friends with our nephew’s cat and they chase and play with each other. I’m sure Peggy Sue is happy in her new home.

Polar - Husky/?? (10 Years Old)
Polar, a very handsome (though neglected) ten year old Husky mix who had been an outdoor dog for all of his life, found his forever home on September 30th, 2013. He now only goes outside to go potty, and spends the rest of the time cuddled up on his bed with his favorite toy(s)! He is loving life as a house dog!
Brutus and Keeta - Boxer and Lab (11 and 13 Years Old)
Brutus and Keeta were surrendered by their owners after they discovered their new baby had severe dog allergies. Being a bonded pair, we made sure these two went together, and both were formally adopted October 22nd, 2013, to an AWESOME family of four!
Akya - Aussie/Lab (12 Years Old)
Akya was surrendered to a local humane society by her owner when he moved into a no-pets-allowed apartment. During the flood, the humane society started to take in flood evacuation animals, so we offered to take her in. She managed to find her forever family just a few days later, and was formally adopted on October 11th, 2013. Now, she will get to go walking, hiking, and swimming in both the mountains and the city!
Annie - Beagle (13 years Old)
Annie was surrendered by her owners when they moved to a new apartment, as she was very unhappy with the change. In her new home, she is very happy, and her hobbies include sleeping, eating chicken, and walking. When it's warm, she spends the day sleeping in the sun, but when it's cold, she gets to sleep right in front of the fireplace with her sister, a cat named Stephanie.
Elli - German Shepherd (12 Years Old)
Elli was surrendered to a local humane society, along with one other senior German Shepherd, after spending more than half of her life tied outside in the backyard. She had a host of medical issues, including severe spondylosis, GSD myelopathy, significant arthritis, chronic pancreatitis, and spleen cancer. But despite that, she always maintained a gentle and loving nature, giving kisses to everyone she met (dogs and people alike), and wanting to be with her people.
The director of CKSDR ended up adopting her. After fostering her for just a few weeks, she knew Elli was meant to stay with her. Elli lived for two more months after her adoption, but at the end of July, her quality of life plummeted due to her numerous medical issues, and the decision was made to let Elli go. We all miss her every day!

Bronco - Pomeranian (19 Years Old)
Bronco, now affectionately know as the "Little One", was surrendered to a local shelter at the age of 19. He is the cutest and spunkiest little man you'll ever meet, and nobody can believe he's as old as his former owners said he is (we think they may have accidentally put a "1" before his real age)!. His mom and big brother Leo, a 12 yr old Pomeranian, love having him, and he now enjoys sleeping on or in between the couches, and dragging his mom along on daily "hops" around the block.
Sophie - Beagle (14 Years Old)
Sophie was surrendered by her owner, who was moving into an assisted living facility that did not accept dogs. Sophie went right into a foster-to-adopt situation, with the woman became her mom on May 10th, 2013! Sophie now visits nursing homes, and is a companion to the other senior Beagle in her new home. She loves being a therapy dog!
Rusty - Husky/Sheltie (12 Years Old)
Rusty was adopted even before he entered the rescue (all the way from Oklahoma, transported by the wonderful organization Pilots n' Paws), though it was formalized on March 7th, 2013, when he headed off to his new home! As a very polite, distinguished, and sweet older gentleman he was able to capture the heart of his mom over the internet! He now has two other dog siblings, and is loved by all.
Jack and Peaches- Lab/Coonhound (10 Years Old)
Jack and Peaches, a bonded sibling pair, found their home on February 10th, 2013! We got very attached to these two siblings during the time they were with us, and are so happy that they are now living on 10 acres with another other black and white dog, a cat, and two lovely people to call their own!
Possum- Husky/Heeler/?? (12++ Years Old)
Possum was adopted, after one day in the rescue, on January 28th, 2013! He now lives with Norman (the twenty-one year old terrier), and is the acting "heating pad" to all his other "doggy-siblings" when he's not outside in the backyard! He usually carries around a small pink plush toy, and is very attached to his dad!
Possum is about 100 years old...not sure what he is...he looks kind of like a wolf! I was just going to foster Possum, but after I saw what kind of shape he was in (he has severe arthritis and he's mostly deaf) I thought it would be best if he stayed here with us...even though he isn't a little dog (shhhh don't tell him). Possum was abandoned in an apartment after his owners had been evicted, so he's a little traumatized. He is a slow sweet guy. He loves tennis balls and his pink squeaky toy. He's very good at fetch, but with his arthritis he can't go too far or too fast! We've figured out the magical cocktail for his arthritis (tramadol, rimadyl and gabapentin) so he's feeling much better!

Kenya- Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (11 Years Old)
Kenya was adopted December 15th, 2012 to her loving mom. She now gets to chase the neighborhood rabbits and birds, go rollerblading, and sleep on a super comfy orthopedic bed! She even has made a doggie friend, who she gets to go on walks with! Kenya's living the good life!
Sir Oscarlott- Dachshund (12 Years Old)
Sir Oscarlott was adopted on October 26th, 2012 by a wonderful family who, in addition to renaming him "Dudley", gave him the best days of his life. Sadly, about a year after his adoption, Dudley passed away surrounded by all of the people who loved him. He is dearly missed.
Koko- Terrier (21 years old)
Koko (now "Norman") went to his new home, the Little Old Dog Sanctuary, on September 25th, 2012.
Norman had a terrible skin condition and a horrible case of worms...but he's doing great and all of his fur has grown back. Norman is completely deaf and somewhat blind. He has arthritis in his back hips so he kind of teeters when he walks. Norman LOVES to bark. This happens with a lot of our deaf residents...sometimes they will just bark nonstop. Norman also loves the chickens, he'll do anything to be near them. I'm not sure if he wants to play with them or eat them...but as his age the hens could probably eat him, so they are only allowed interaction through the fence!

Zephyrus- Japanese Mastiff (8 years old)
Zeph came to us from a local county shelter where he had sat for 6 months in the hopes of finding a forever home. Though one family adotped him, he was returned shortly after for eating the house (the curtains, the carpet, the door jams, the cabinets, etc.) while his family was away for a few hours. When they returned, they found him fast asleep on the kitchen counter. While we found this funny, we could understand why it was deterring others from wanting to give Zeph his forever home. However, this handsome Tosa Inu found his home on September 16th, 2012 with a family of three. Since his new dad is a pastor at a local church, he has become the church dog, and doesn't have to be left alone!
