What is fospice?
Fospice is a combination of foster and hospice. Unlike traditional fostering, fospice homes are forever- but during that time you and your fospice animal will be supported by the rescue. This allows you to give a loving, permanent home to an animal in dire need, without the worry of how to afford care.
What resources do you provide?
We provide everything your animal needs- food, beds, bowls, pee pads, and any other needed supplies. Additionally, we cover all veterinary expenses and often transport to and from the vet in accordance with your schedule should you be unable to do so. We are also there to provide advice, so no worries if you aren't experienced- just be willing to learn and put in the time!
What type of animals qualify for fospice?
Almost all of the animals that we accept into our rescue are fospice cases. This is because, in recent years, other rescues and shelters have done a wonderful job of finding homes for adoptable seniors. So now we are here as a "last resort", for those who are unadoptable due to advanced age or serious health issues that the general public may not be able or willing to deal with. This includes anything from diabetes, congestive heart failure, cancer, or being 22-years-old (looking at you, James!). We primarily work with dogs but on occasion we are contacted about cats as well.
How long will I have my fospice animal?
It's really hard to say! We have had dogs that outlive their life expectancy by many years, and others that have left us before we expected it due to a hidden terminal condition.
What happens when it's "time"?
The saddest part of caring for animals is having to say goodbye, and fospice means that this may happen quicker than usual. Barring any extenuating medical circumstances, we have all euthanasias performed in-home. We have found that in-home is easier on everyone involved, and we will be there to support you and say goodbye along with our incredible vet Dr. Rambus. All animals are privately cremated and their ashes will be returned to you, their family.
